About Anna


Our violin teacher, Anna Corcoran, teaches classical violin and fiddle, and brings her can-do attitude and warm, approachable teaching style to the studio. She has a wealth of experience and talent and is an inspiration for students of all ages. Anna is a professional violinist and has played in orchestras and chamber ensembles around the world.

Anna earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and a Master of Music degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. She performs with ensembles such as Orchestra Santa Monica, Long Beach Symphony, New West Symphony and the Santa Barbara String Quartet.

Anna’s favorite musicians include Pinchas Zukerman, Jascha Heifetz, Jacqueline du Pre, Alasdair Fraser, Natalie Haas, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Which musician would you like to play with?

With the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. A small ensemble with the potential for a ton of sound and versatility!

Which musician has influenced you the most?

The violinists of the “Golden Era” like Jascha Heifetz and Josef Hassid.

What can you teach me better on your instrument than any other teacher?

How to make a beautiful tone on the instrument by using your body to its full potential.

How did you learn to play your instrument?

I started when I was 5 and started learning with the Suzuki method.

Which personal trait helped you the most while practicing?

Patience

What does your instrument have that others don't?

Ability for a rich continuous sound. It’s one of the closest instruments to the human voice!

How do you handle children?

Baby steps! All children have the potential to learn an instrument. I try to take their strengths and focus on building them up.

What has been your greatest experience as a musician so far?

Playing Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto on a Stradivarius violin.

What was the biggest stage you played on?

Walt Disney Concert Hall

Which record would you take with you to the desert island?

Pride and Prejudice movie soundtrack

Besides music, what else is important in your life?

Floral design, long dinners with friends and family, getting out into nature!
